    Video of the play

Umpire was able to walk off the field under his own power.

Dave Roberts said it appears the bat got Nate Tomlinson on the nose, which he said was the “best-case scenario” of such a scary situation. No other update so far.

Talk about the worst luck of his life.

  5. silverfoxxflame

Jesus fucking christ, I was thinking the bat broke and smacked him in the head or on the mask, not literally hit him in the face through his mask with the broken spike end. That is fucking horrifying

Straight out of a final destination movie.

  7. sam_dewy

    Holy shit!!!! So scary.

    But *badass* pic lol

  8. dontsteponthecrack

You have to remember the bat is not going towards his face but across it – the picture is terrifying if it was going directly towards his face!

    “What…are you BLIND, Blue!?!?!”

  10. Thedarkpp

I was at the game in the Loge level behind home plate. Bat cracks and you follow the ball with your eyes.

But when the play’s over I look back to home and the umps down and lumped over. It was so obvious what happened, without them showing a replay in the stadium. Shit was crazy.

  11. FirstGiveMeTheLamp

Reminds me of Darcy Kuemper. Hope he’s alright.

Dude is lucky. Flashbacks of that goalie getting slashed in the neck by a skate are coming up. Phew.

Well, at least he didn’t have to watch the Angles play anymore

It’s weird to think about the eye as an exposed part of the brain!

The broken bat gods thought it was Angel Hernandez

Further proof that Mike Trout is an amazing talent. Even his broken bats need to result in some impressive play.

Joking aside, hope Tomlinson is okay.

Was at the game. Heard the crack of the bat and knew it was a broken bat. Glanced back down after realizing it was going to be a dead quail pop-up and saw the Ump on the ground on all fours and immediately realized he must have gotten hit and was hurt.

I’ve been saying they need to do something about this for years. Someone is going to get blinded or killed. They need a filament coating that holds the pieces together.

Reminds me of the [death of the King of France Henry II](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_II_of_France) during a joust tournament.
He received a splinter of a broken lance in his eye despite his helmet, suffered brain damage and died of sepsis.

  22. cisternino99

The article I read said he got a shard in the face. Seems like the understatement of the year.

  23. Eskuire

Man, thats terrifying. I remember as a catcher about a decade ago, we had some dude absolutely shatter some crap wooden bat in a game, took a chunk of it right into the eye and had to get an emergency procedure to remove a bunch of splinters. Had to wear an eyepatch for almost a month. Hopefully he doesnt get any lasting effects

    Fucking ref is fucking BLIND

  25. baker1781

More reason to get rid of home plate umps and switch to camera-enforced strike zone, similar to what tennis has for line calls.

Is there any blood?! I can’t watch the video if there’s any blood. Please tell me there isn’t any blood.

  29. bludvein

From the title I thought a player bashed the ump with a broken bat before clicking on the pic. Instead it’s just incredibly unlucky.

Why must the heavens deny my will, Mr. Hernandez should have been at the plate to make the proper call, it was clearly a strike.
